Synopsis

The assignment gave us 3 choices of what we would like to choose - movie, game and musical concert poster. My choice was a movie, which then I have to create a short synopsis of what the story is, then only I can interpret it in my poster.

Figure 1. Ideation

So this is the first synopsis I came up for the very first consultation.

"Once there was an obese man in his thirties who lives his life for chocolate - his obsession towards chocolate wouldn’t beat any until he met this one girl, who loves to do karate. Despite her tomboyish personality, no one ever invests their hearts towards her. She wouldn’t miss the chance, so there comes the opportunity to the guy too - with one condition - sacrifice the obsession. Will the love overpowers the obsession of the guy on chocolate?"

I would like to have a fun, bubbly feel in my poster, so romance would be the main genre of the story. Although, the lecturer expected me to came up with a plot twist to make the story more interesting, so I came up with the updated synopsis.

But we never know that it turned out the other way around........ The guy ended up gives up on his obsession and loses the weight, yet the girl started to get obsessed with the chocolate without the guy knowing, thus the girl ended up gaining weight....."

Target Audience: Young adults who enjoy watching dramas.

Settings : Modern Era

Moodboard & Poster Ideas

The synopsis was consulted alongside the moodboard which I proposed the styling I would like to have for my poster. (Moodboard could be accessible through my pinterest account.) However, Mr. Mike and Miss Anis were unsure whether the styling could actually resemble the synopsis that I'm proposing, saying that it might just work, but there should be something in there that makes the poster stand out, giving a scenario to make it clearer : "Imagine that 3 posters with the same theme will be released at the same time, what will make your poster standout?" and gave me some inspirations and references too. With that, I reflected.

I had some ideas in mind regarding the posters ideas, too. Yet, my lecturer told me that it could be thought better, although it resembles the main characters' trait.

Research - Blog Question

Topic of Choice : Television (TV)

Q1. What is the evolution of the TV industry and what has YouTube and Netflix done to the broadcast industry?

Figure 5. Cable TV

TV industry has developed in many ways, which is divided into three big transitions over the past 30 years. When TV was utilized for traditional broadcasting by limited networks, in 80's the choices offered and other multiple video program distribution provided has increased, made cable TV very popular. It was not until 1996, where TV cable has gone advanced into all digital broadcasting in order to mandate the Federal Communications Commision. Although it didn't give much impact to the consumers, it matters towards the evolution of TV, on how it is made and distributed.

The third transition would be described as the major transition compared to the first two changes as within this period, happening on 2010 onwards - as the evolution evolves from digital delivery of content via over-the-air, cable and satellite to include delivery over the internet. It was that the massive growth of smartphones and tablets which is convenient to use, to bring along, made it on high demand. Not to mention streaming videos online demand has rapidly increased, made TV upgrades its features in streaming video, drove personal TV viewing to custom apps on devices. The TV-Internet is expected to maximise the user experience as its flexibility to watch anything they want by streaming, tv distribution features, programmatic advertisement technology, addressable advertising and engagement towards the viewers.

Figure 6. Smart TV
TV industry is expected to develop or multichannel networks, delivering a blend of TV and internet, made the traditional TV format (e.g cable TV) has become limited.

Youtube and Netflix are very well-known for its video streaming company, which is convenient, efficient, entertaining. Youtube videos are more likely to be done by anyone, professionals or not, make it unfounded in any TV channels - which the genre of videos uploaded is wider, unlimited - where the unexpected could make a trend towards the overall industry. With such trend and impact made, YouTube videos which have gone viral has received high demand towards the TV and broadcasting industry - for instance, some talk shows inviting the YouTubers, to the videos uploaded and broadcasted for some references.

Netflix on the other hand was initially a DVD rentals and sales that has expanded their business to videos online streaming. Its online video streaming features has made the sales increases - providing movies to series that has been broadcasted in TV that the users wanted to watch it over again or missed the broadcasting time is considered one of the main factors. It is then become a high demand whereas internet has gone advanced too, made online streaming done more easier and efficient. Considering the huge trend, Netflix then produced their own TV Series, featured in other broadcasting channels other than Netflix in several countries too.

These 2 well-known video streaming company has made the broadcasting industry degraded in a way, yet also would benefit the industry with having some collaborations, or maybe new features that has provided YouTube/Netflix services in it, and many more.
