Final Project : Merchandising & Packaging (40%)

Lectures

Instructions

The Brief
You have to design 6 merchandises for the brand that you have designed previously from Brand and Strategy class. The merchandises should reflect the brand. You have to design a complete set of packaging for the merchandises and think how it should be able to be displayed on the shelves.

Project Requirements
• Finished packaging should be physically made and its function demonstrable using either the real objects it is to hold, or a mockup of your making.
• You will document the project’s progress, including photographs and early progress, on your design journal.
• Remember that craft counts! As with all work in this class, please pretend you are pitching this design to a real-world client.

Project timeline
Week 10: Itemize the 6 merchandises and discuss with your lecturer
Week 11: Prepare mood board and bring a lot of sketches of the packaging and merchandises
Week 12: Ideation and feedback session, box-making tutorial, special in-class challenge, assign early prototyping
Week 13: Feedback session, work day
Week 14: Feedback session and final demos. You have to professionally photograph the final product as evidence for TDS website.

Learning outcome:
Learning outcome of the exercise is about convincing a consumer to buy into an idea.
You will be also introduced to the concept of the target audience and will asked to consider a relevant target audience for their product when coming up with their ideas.

Project Journal:

Set up an individual design blog via blogger.com or wordpress.com. Please email your lecturer the URL. This journal should contain sketches, mind maps, mood boards, online articles, visuals and other multimedia pertaining relevant research to your target audience, art direction, packaging references and other relevant information.

Progressions

Week 10
To start off with the project, each of us briefly explained to Sir Shamsul what is our KL branding about. As I explained about mine (which is Fit KL), Sir Shamsul told me that I can focus on the 'exercise' aspect instead of 'fitting the KL surroundings' - he told me it's stronger and easier to come up with merchandises. He also said that T-shirt should be a compulsory merchandise. As noted, I began with ideation on selecting the merchandises.

Week 11
I listed 6 items I items I find it effective and consulted with Sir Shamsul.

During this week itself, he remarked that we can just reduced the items into 4 (alongside the T-shirt and box). And after consulting, I decided to come up with T-Shirt, Drawstring bag and cycling bottle.

Week 12

(Raya break, so no consultation held).
During the break, I began to ideate my box concept.

After several thoughts, I decided to come up with a shoebox. My thought behind this is that people can store their shoes onto the box once they took every item out. I also wanted to add innovative feature on the box which is the 'handle', so it's convenient to be brought along.

I also came up with T-shirt sketches.

And I digitised it.

As of the drawstring bag & bottle, I somehow utilised the one I had for the T-shirt designs so it will look consistent.

Week 13
I showed by digitised items and share my box concept to Sir Shamsul.

He mentioned that the circular road is interesting and told me to proceed with that. As of the drawstring bag, he suggested that make the bag blue as it complements more when wearing the T-shirt (in comparison to a white drawstring bag which looks a bit awkward worn together). He also advised to straight print the items that I can focus on the box.

Week 14 & 15

Box

I began to find the materials for the box and began to laser cut it for test mockup. I ended up using a thick coated paper as my material as said that it might work too (initial plan was to have a corrugated fiber board but sources couldn't be found).

dieline for the box

first set mockup.

got mixed up with the placement of the rectangular hole - and notice how
the holes are too big.

As tested, I fixed the dieline and print and laser cut it again, until finally i got it right (yay!).

finalised dieline.

T-Shirt
To recap, below is the finalised design of the T-Shirt.

I chose to do a UV printing for my T-Shirt. As of the material of the T-Shirt, I chose a nylon material, as it reflects a sports tee.

Drawstring Bag
As of my drawstring bag, I submitted the finalised design to the supplier and got it printed.

Bottle
I printed the stickers as tested it on the actual bottle.

Turns out it slightly overlaps to one another. With this, I readjust the size and printed again.

Feedback

Week 10
Specific Feedback : Idea is solid. Proceed with the exercise concept as it is stronger compared to the 'Fitting the KL surroundings'. Start to think about 6 items that would complement your brand.

Week 11
General Feedback : Let's reduce the items into 4 (box & T-Shirt is included on the four) as I afraid it will be too rush for you guys.
Specific Feedback : Hm.. Every items you came up with will look really nice altogether. But if I was to reduce it, I'll choose T-shirt, drawstring bag and bottle. You can proceed with the remaining if you got time.

Week 12
No consultation due to Raya break.

Week 13
Specific Feedback : Oh, the circular road design is interesting. Perhaps put the logo inside the circle? As of the drawstring bag, make the background blue into white - imagine if the person is wearing the t-shirt and drawstring bag altogether, it wont look as nice. And let's lock the design and you can start print it out already - focus more on the box.

Week 14
Specific Feedback : As of the material, you can proceed with the substitute material (the thick paper). Let's don't waste much time on the material and start laser cut your box. And I don't think that the additional items is longer necessary, let's just proceed with the 3 items we firstly locked down.

Reflection
I find the overall project is fun exploring despite the challenges I went. First things first, I had a hard time in finding resources for the items I've proposed (drawstring bags tend to be sold in bulks, cycling bottles that are expensive) that it took longer than expected for me to just get the resources. Not to mention the material of the box too, that I ended up using substitute material for it (thankfully that it somehow worked, although I'm not fully satisfied with it). I also feel like I'm not managing my time that well on the project that I constructed my box quite last minute. This makes me realize on how time management is very important (guess I was quite carried away with other modules' workload). But thankfully I managed to finish it in time! The project has widened my understanding towards brand merchandising too. All in all, it was a challenging one.

Book
The Packaging Designer's Book of Patterns (Fourth Edition) by Laszlo Roth & George Wybenga

The book focuses on explanations when constructing packaging to give out dieline samples. Through this book, I've learned that :

Folding cartons are manufactured using three main processes: printing, die-cutting, and finishing.
- Printing comes in vary, which includes letterpress, offset lithography, gravure, flexography, and silk screen.
- There are three methods of die-cutting. This includes hollow diecutting, steel rule diecutting and laser diecutting.
- Finishing operations include gluing (using adhesives), windowing (die-cutting), coating, and laminating.

The book also suggests the best materials to be used for certain product, which is very helpful and interesting!

Diecuts I find interesting are as follows.
